6 Commodore Perry 35, Farrell 34 (see below)

At Sheakleyville, coach Bob Messina’s Lady Panthers (1-0, 7-4) edged the Lady Steelers (0-1, 2-8) in a thrilling Region 1-A opener for both teams.

Farrell led 10-7 after the opening 8 minutes, but were outscored 10-1 in the 2nd quarter as CP took a 17-11 lead at halftime. The Lady Panthers led 22-17 after 3 quarters and Farrell held a 17-13 advantage in scoring in the 4th.

The Lady Steelers went up 34-31 with 38 seconds to go, but CP’s Stephanie Vaughn drained a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to tie it at 34-all. Farrell got the ball back, but missed a shot and the ball went out of bounds. CP’s Sarah Nagy then drove for a lay-up and was fouled. She sank the winning foul shot with 1.4 seconds left.

Vaughn finished with 11 points for CP while Emily Kitchen recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Farrell’s Bria Gambill, who turned her ankle and missed the majority of Thursday night’s loss to Brookfield, scored 11 for the Lady Steelers.

“It was a gut-it-out, grind-it-out kind of game,” said Messina. “The girls played their hearts out. It was just a great effort and I’m proud of them.”

Farrell (2-7) was forced into 23 turnovers, and the young Lady Steelers scored almost twice as many free throws (13) as field goals (7). For Farrell, Tatyana Page produced 6 points.

The Lady Steelers suffered a scare when Bria Gambill turned her right ankle a minute into the tilt and did not return. Though she appeared primed to try to play in the 2nd half, she did not, and her status is uncertain.

Hammond is saavy enough to realize if you stay in the game long enough, eventually everything evens out.

“Believe me, we’ve taken our lumps. We lost one last year to (Lady Steelers’ skipper Eddie Turosky) over at our place by one,” Hammond recalled. “We always battle with Eddie’s teams, and I like playing this game, I like playing (Farrell).”

Brookfield will be part of the Struthers sectional, Hammond said, and could potentially host an opening-round game.

February Games

3 Farrell 61, Reynolds 35 (see below)

It’s been a sometimes trying season for the Farrell and Reynolds girls’ basketball teams; however the Lady Steelers’ perseverance paid off Monday night.

The visiting Lady Raiders rolled to a 22-19 margin at intermission, but Farrell forged 42 second-half points en route to a 61-35 Region 1-A win.

At E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, Bria Gambill, Key-Asia Oatis and Tatyana Page produced 11 points apiece for Farrell (4-4, 6-12) — 26 after intermission.

“It’s a great victory! The kids’ season was on the line,” summarized Lady Steelers’ skipper Eddie Turosky. “I told ’em, ‘If you lose, the best you can do is five-and-five.’ But we’ve gotta go to Kennedy, which is a tough opponent up there

“So, realistically, the way we were looking at it is we had to get this one (Monday) night in order to give ourselves any chance of getting into the (District 10) playoffs.”

Turosky got the balanced contributions he had been seeking from the Lady Steelers. In addition the the aforementioned trio, Whitney Murray mustered 9 points and snared 6 caroms Matyra Evans ended with 8 points and a handful of rebounds, Oatis snared a team-high 7 rebounds and Page and Gambill garnered 4 and 3 assists, respectively.

“They came out and showed great senior leadership — Whitney, Bria and ‘Peanut’ (Janee Avery),” Turosky praised.

“It’s just amazing the team effort they showed. They never got discouraged,” Turosky continued, relating, “We’ve had moments this season where things went down and we never got back up; (Mon)day they stayed the course and got a great win against a great Reynolds team.”

With Kayla Thompson tallying 2 treys, Rose Stoyer another, and Brooke Bresnan bucketing 8 points, the Lady Raiders recorded 6-for-16 first-half shooting, while Farrell labored through a 5-for-19 performance, resulting in Reynolds’ 3-point halftime edge.

However Farrell’s athleticism, in the form of half- and three-quarter court traps, resulted in Reynolds turning over the ball 26 times — 14 during the 2nd half.

“We were tryin’ to play their game for a while there in a little half-court set. But my coaches and I talked and decided to get a little pressure on them, and the second half we went full-court pressure,” Turosky explained. “It seemed as though (Lady Raiders’ Head Coach Will Juranovich) was adjusting, so we went back to a half-court trap, and it gave them some trouble.”

For Reynolds (4-3, 5-12), Bresnan brokered a 13-point, 7-rebound, 2-assist line, while Thompson tallied 10, tossing in a trio of treys. Stoyer scored 8, twice tripling, while Alex Napadano notched a half-dozen rebounds in spite of game-long personal-foul problems.

Farrell finished 20 for 48 from the floor (41.7 percent) and battled on the boards as Reynolds outrebounded the Lady Steelers by a slight 32-31 margin. Also, the Lady Steelers were guilty of only 13 miscues, 5 during the 2nd half.

“That’s what I’ve been looking for all year,” Turosky admitted. “We have talent, but it’s just been a matter of them all jelling together and getting it done.

“Hat’s off to every kid on this team. They’ve stayed in the gym every day with me, working hard. I couldn’t be prouder of this team, and congrats to my staff (Tieshia Stubbs, Jordan Snyder, Jermaine Holden) ’cause they did a great job (Monday) night.”

7 Sharon 57, Farrell 33 (see below)

At the outset, Sharon was not so much concerned with ceremony, as the Lady Tigers found Farrell formidable. Bria Gambill garnered 13 first-period points, staking the visiting Lady Steelers to a 15-14 lead.

However during the 2nd stanza Kelsie McGranahan garnered game-tying buckets at 17 and 19. The teams traded leads once more before Sharon surged on Sanders’ 7 points, McGranahan’s handful — she and Mallory Torr tallied triples — and Delisa Smith’s 3.

In the 1st half’s waning seconds Smith passed to McGranahan, who subsequently found Mal Torr for a trey at the buzzer that enabled the Lady Tigers to take a 32-20 margin at intermission.

With Sanders scoring 6 points and Farrell misfiring on 14 of 16 floor shots, Sharon secured an insurmountable 43-26 edge through 3 quarters.

“Once we settled down and started playing our game, then we kind’ve made better passes, got some layups, and just got back to what we need to do,” Joseph said. “(McGranahan) comes to practice and works on those jumpers, because she knows that’s where she is on the floor She works at it every day, knocks ’em down, and I was happy for her. She played really well and knocked down some big shots for us.”

In addition to Sanders, Mal Torr tallied a 12-point, 5-rebound, 3-assist line, McGranahan grabbed 9 rebounds and scored 7, and ’Tina Jacoway joined in with a game-high 7 assists to go with a handful of rebounds and 5 points.

“It’s always nice to win the region,” said Mele. “The girls have worked hard and it was one of our goals from the onset. Now we can focus on our other goals.

“I really have to give credit to Farrell. They put it to us in the first quarter, but we settled down, forced quite a few turnovers and started playing as a team.”
